Software prototypes are solutions implemented with minimal investment of time and effort. Their purpose is to quickly validate an idea or an approach to solving a business problem. Prototypes aren’t always meant to evolve into a final solution, but they do provide input to the decisions regarding further investments.
Being able to move quickly and seize the opportunity is often the decider of success. Many companies maintain multiple teams permanently trying new, high risk and long-shot projects as part of their R&D efforts. Even if one of those efforts results in the next multi-billion dollar product, the returns pay back the investment many times over.
Prototypes are often developed in-house, But there are also reasons to outsource this work
The expertise required to implement the prototype is not available in-house and acquiring it is not economical.
Internal engineering bandwidth is not sufficient to take on this work, given the business priorities and hiring is not justified.
The project is time sensitive and internal resources ramping up on new tech might allow competition to take the lead.
The project is going to be outsourced and having a head start in the form of a prototype will make working with vendor smoother.
Clean room, conflict of interest, sovereign and other legal or regulatory constraints may preclude in-house development.
